Letter: Traffic controls signs imperative for safety

All traffic control stop signs at intersections in the city center and at the entrance and exit roads onto Interstate 380 in downtown Cedar Rapids should be left in place. They may always be switched to flashing yellow when they are not needed, but during busy events they are needed, especially by the elderly.

Recently, I was hit hard by an accelerating car at the intersection of Seventh Street and Third Avenue SE while coming down the sidewalk on my bicycle, thrown to the pavement, and my right collarbone was broken. The traffic control signs for pedestrians or bicyclists were inadequate and in many other places in Cedar Rapids the electric stop signs for pedestrians, I've noticed, have been removed and not replaced. For example, at 15th Street and First Avenue NE. Luckily, I survived. I could have been killed.
