Moody supplies dagger in ISU’s overtime win
Feb. 17, 2015 11:10 pm
AMES - Wild runs dominated most of the game between Iowa State and Oklahoma, but it was a key shot by Iowa State senior that sealed a much needed win.
Guard Nikki Moody splashed in her only 3-pointer last night in the final stages of overtime, and it helped give the Cyclones an 84-76 overtime win against the Sooners in Hilton Coliseum. Guard Brynn Williamson led Iowa State with 24 points, and Moody added 22.
A hangover from a poor offensive night in its last game carried over for Iowa State early. The Cyclones had three turnovers and trailed 8-2, forcing ISU Coach Bill Fennelly to call a timeout just 2:08 into the game. Moody hit a basket to make it 8-4, but an 8-0 run by the Sooners gave them a 16-4 advantage.
Oklahoma led 19-9 with 12:47 to go in the half, but Iowa State started to find its stroke. The Cyclones committed six turnovers a little more than eight minutes into the game, but went on a 10-0 run and two free throws from Moody tied the game at 19-19.
Williamson's 3-pointer swished to give Iowa State its first lead of the night at 22-19, forcing an OU timeout. ISU sophomore Seanna Johnson made a triple of her own to cap a 16-0 run by the Cyclones during which connected on four 3-pointers.
The Sooners went on a 5-0 run of their own, but Iowa State got back into a groove again on both ends of the floor. ISU freshman Emily Durr was fouled on a 3-point shot, sending her to the line where she made all three shots.
Iowa State used a 12-2 run during the next 4:07 to take an 11-point lead at the last media timeout, and eventually a 41-30 advantage at halftime. The Cyclones also out-rebounded the Sooners 21-9 in the opening period.
Trailing 57-47 with 12:01 to go, Oklahoma went on a 19-5 run, helped by three 3-pointers from Sharane Campbell-Olds, to take a 66-62 lead with 4:57 to go. Campbell-Olds was 5 for 7 from long range and finished with 18 points.
Just 58.8 seconds remained when Maddie Manning fouled Williamson, who made 1 of 2 free throws to knot the game at 70-70. A last-second layup try by Moody was no good and forced overtime.
Tied 74-74 with 2:18 in the extra period, Moody cashed in on a 3-pointer, her first of the night, to give the Cyclones the permanent lead.
A layup in traffic from Williamson sealed the ISU victory.
