Letter: Honesty lacking in political campaigns

In a letter to The Gazette on Dec. 19 ('Election was fair and honest”), James Schmitz argues that the federal election was beyond reproach.
Despite attempted disruptions from several sources, most qualified voters who wanted to vote were apparently allowed to do so, and the ballots seem, by and large, to have been counted accurately. So the election was, for the most part, 'fair” at its most elemental level.
'Honest” is a whole different story. From the earliest days of the primaries, the electorate was bombarded with lies and vituperations from every direction, but most notably from the allegedly conservative sector, and specifically from the Republican candidate himself.
I worry about fairness in future elections, but I fear that honesty will soon disappear from our national polity.
