Mary was born Oct. 31, 1915, in Woodland, Iowa, to John and Mary (Berstler) Thornton. She graduated from old Washington High School in 1933. Mary was united in marriage to John Frederikson on Sept. 15, 1940, in Kahoka, Mo. She worked at Woolworth's dime store until World War II, then worked at Collins during the war. During the '60s, Mary worked at Kieck's. She also typed a manuscript for a rabbi here in Cedar Rapids and worked for State Farm Insurance Co. for a short time, along with the health department. After she retired, she took up painting and painted floral and scenic pictures; she was a very talented artist.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, John; her parents; her brother, Rolla Thornton; and her sister, Lena Standard.
