CEDAR RAPIDS - Cedar Rapids Jefferson junior Spencer Van Scoyoc has verbally committed to play baseball at Arizona State University, he announced Saturday on Twitter.
A left-handed pitcher and outfielder, Van Scoyoc is the grandson of famous former Norway High School baseball coach Jim Van Scoyoc. He hit .400 in 125 at-bats last season for the J-Hawks, with 19 doubles, three triples, six home runs and 38 RBIs.
As a pitcher, he threw 25 1/3 innings, allowing just 16 hits and striking out 40. Van Scoyoc is the second Metro prep to commit to a power college program in the last six months, following Cedar Rapids Washington outfielder Trey Leonard (Louisville).
