New Iowa law toughens penalties for child porn, human trafficking

Gov. Terry Branstad has signed into law a measure toughening Iowa's child pornography and human trafficking laws to make it easier to get convictions.
Branstad signed the measure Wednesday before a crowd of child advocates in a ceremony in his formal office.
Attorney General Tom Miller says the measure will clear away a number of complications. For example, one court ruling had found that in cases involving a number of images, only one child pornography charge could be filed. The measure signed by the governor allows one charge per victim.
Critics had warned that years of court decisions and vague laws often made it difficult to bring charges in cases of child pornography or human trafficking.
