Hieb, Kay
Kay Hieb, 82, of Marion, died Sunday, Aug.4, 2013, at her home, following a long illness. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, 2013, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marion. The family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion, and one hour before mass Thursday at the church. Entombment will take place at a later date.
Survivors include her husband, Ed of Marion; her children, Brad (Angela) Hieb of Farmington Hills, Mich., Marty (fiancee Faye) Hieb of St. Louis Park, Minn. and Jennifer Leaders of Prairie Village, Kan.; one sister, DeeDee Spanjers of York, Neb.; and two grandchildren, Kayla and Amber.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, John.
Kay was born Feb. 4, 1931, in Oelwein, the daughter of Howard and Hazel (O'Brien) Cross. She married Edwin Hieb on June 30, 1962, in Cedar Rapids. Kay graduated from University of Iowa with a degree in Journalism, and taught English and Journalism at Jefferson High School and later was a teacher's aide at Indian Creek Elementary. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marion.
One of Kay's greatest joys in life was taking care of her family and home. She was an avid reader, excellent cook and enjoyed playing cards with her husband and friends. Kay held a special interest in those she taught and was thrilled when later in her life she had the opportunity to return to the education system. Kay was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, friend and teacher. She touched many lives in many ways and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
