An SUV carrying a young boy crashed off of Highway 30 early Thursday night.
Kelly Jess, 42, of Cedar Rapids, was headed westbound at around 6 p.m. when she lost control of her Kia Sorento after hitting a rough patch of ice near mile-marker 239. The vehicle flipped end over end and then rolled over its side repeatedly before coming to a rest 30 yards north of the highway.
Both Jess and the boy, approximately eight to ten years old, were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the accident. Iowa State Patrol troopers said the seatbelts and airbags saved both of their lives.
The boy was uninjured in the accident and Jess was taken to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for non-life threatening injuries.
