LOIS K. STEGEN
Cedar Rapids
Lois Kay Stegen, 78, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2016, at Rockridge Care Center in Shellsburg after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.
Lois was born June 11, 1937, to William and Leona Voigt in Fenton, Iowa. She married her first and only husband, Arlan Stegen, on May 28, 1966, in Cedar Falls. Lois started teaching when she was 19 years old in Mallard in northwest Iowa with a two-year degree. She went to college in the summer time until she got her four-year degree. Her first big school was Valley Park in Cedar Falls. When they moved to Cedar Rapids in 1969, she got a job teaching sixth grade at Prairie Elementary (College Community schools), where she taught for 26 years. Lois was an above average teacher, inspiring many children during her teaching at College Community. One of her students even went on to study teaching after being inspired by her. She was a model citizen and she never even got a traffic ticket. She loved to travel the world with Arlan at her side.
Lois is survived by her loving husband of 49 years, Arlan (founder and owner of Sports Outfitters); their son, Aaron; three wonderful grandchildren, Alex, Abigail and Ayden; her half brothers, Calvin and Merle; and her sisters, Betty and Peggy.
She was preceded in death by her parents and half sister, Norma.
A celebration of life will take place later in the spring.
