CHRISTY (KRAMER) RHOADS
Falmouth, Mass.
Christy (Kramer) Rhoads of Falmouth, Mass., was born in Lake Geneva, Wis., on Nov. 23, 1936, and passed away Saturday, Jan. 12, 2019, from complications suffered from a heart attack on Christmas Day.
She was predeceased by her parents, Christian John Kramer and Grace (Kidder) Kramer.
She grew up in Mount Vernon, Iowa, near Cedar Rapids, and graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1955. She attended Cornell College in Mount Vernon and received a B.A. in elementary education and Spanish in 1960. She met her husband, Donald Rhoads, while at Cornell. They married in 1959. Christy taught grade school in Anamosa and Lone Tree, Iowa, while her husband attended the University of Iowa. They later moved to Harvey, Ill., while her husband attended the University of Chicago. They raised their family in Hamden, Conn., and Woods Hole, Mass.
Christy was very involved in her community. She was active in the PEO sisterhood where she served as president of Chapter C in Hamden. While in Hamden, Christy also served as Cub Scout den mother and as surrogate mother to many Yale University geology graduate students of her professor husband from 1965 to 1985. In 1986, she and her husband moved to Racing Beach, Falmouth, Mass. In Falmouth, Christy became active in the Falmouth Garden Club and Falmouth Historical Society, where she took great pride in tending the herb garden. In Falmouth, she continued her participation with the PEO in the local Chapter AH. She also was a member of the Falmouth Artists Guild, Highfield Hall, Heritage Plantation and Gardens and Delphi social group.
Christy is survived by her husband, Donald C. Rhoads of Falmouth; her brother, Lawrence H. Kramer of Marion, Iowa; her sons, Mark D. Rhoads (Susan) of Northampton, Mass., and Douglas J. Rhoads (Susan) of Hamden; her four grandchildren, Alexandria, Abigail, Gaelen and Jasper; and two cats, Tina and Timmy.
A memorial service will be held in the spring.
