A quick glance at Tuesday night's election results shows that winner Don Karr bested Aaron Saylor in 35 of the city's 47 voting precincts with two of the 47 precincts showing tie votes between the two at-large candidates.
Nine of the ten precincts won by Saylor, of 2142 Richard Dr. NE, were on the city's east side with the other being next to Kirkwood Community College in southwest Cedar Rapids. At age 28, Saylor would have been the youngest council memory if he had won. Saylor also won a close absentee vote, 398 to 393.
Karr, 64, of 1627 Hamer Dr. NW, did particularly well in seven west-side precincts, helping him to a 55 to 45 percent winning margin. Karr had 4,474 votes to Saylor's 3,692.
Saylor and Karr tied in the two northeast Cedar Rapids precincts where voters voted at Faith United Methodist Church and Franklin Middle School.
In the other runoff race on Tuesday, Pat Shey, who defeated Jerry McGrane, won four of nine voting precincts in District 3 and McGrane five of the precincts. Shey, though, won three of the four highest-voting precincts, and Shey also beat McGrane in absentee ballots, 186 to 98.
In total, Shey got 1,366 votes to McGrane's 1,075, a 56- to 44-percent margin.
A precinct breakdown by polling place shows Shey won a majority of voters who voted at Grant Wood Elementary School, Monroe Elementary School, Erskine Elementary School and Johnson Elementary School, while McGrane bested Shey with voters who voted at the African American Historical Museum, First Presbyterian Church, Linn County Election Depot, Metro High School and St. Stephen's Lutheran Church.
Both Shey, 50, of 501 Knollwood Dr. SE, and McGrane, 70, of 1105 Eighth Ave. SE, are current council members. Shey, an at-large council member, decided to take McGrane on for his District 3 seat.
