Double standard with telemedicine
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Dec. 6, 2013 1:09 pm
The Gazette had an interesting article about how through the use of telemedicine, Unity Point nurses are able to monitor a 90-year-old patient in his own home (“Hospitals expand access through technology,” Nov. 25).
The nurses evaluate and assess his health status, adjust medications and contact a physician if they feel there is a need. Am I the only person wondering why this system of telehealth for the frail elderly is being lauded at the same time the Iowa Board of Medicine has denied this same method of providing telemedicine for healthy adult females who have the misfortune of unplanned pregnancies? Whether you believe in abortion or not, this is the epitome of hypocrisy.
