21-only protects our children, community
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Oct. 30, 2013 1:35 pm
As parents, we strongly support maintaining Iowa City's 21-only after 10 p.m. bar ordinance. This law not only protects our children, it is vital to our community's overall public health and safety. With reduced underage access to alcohol downtown through the 21 ordinance, young adults are safer.
A 17 percent decline in high-risk drinking among University of Iowa students is a significant improvement that clearly would not have happened without the ordinance. No doubt this makes for a healthier environment for our K-12 students as well.
Responsible members of our community should not want to go back to the way things were before the 21-only ordinance. We support voting “no” on Tuesday to protect the 21 ordinance.
