Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 11, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, officiated by Pastor Stasia Fine. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the chapel. Interment will follow at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mary Ann was born Oct. 12, 1921, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Ira and Rosetta (Arpy) Mowen. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in Des Moines. She received a B.A. degree in education at Drake University, where she was the first female drum major. She got her teaching certificate from the University of Iowa.
After college, she joined the U.S. Navy WAVES and served for two years during World War II. Mary Ann married Charles H. Washler in 1947. They moved to Cedar Rapids, where they raised three children, and she taught elementary education in the Cedar Rapids public schools for 25 years.
She was an alumna of Alpha Xi Delta Sorority and a very actively involved member at First Christian Church. She had a passion for most sports (Go Hawkeyes!), camping and traveling, often visiting family members far away. Mary Ann dearly loved her family and was still attending great-grandchildren's school programs shortly before she passed away at age 95.
Mary Ann is survived by her children, Mary Ellen (Robert) Verti of Frederick, Colo., Steven (Becky) Washler of Cedar Rapids and Kay (Earl) Lollis of Aurora, Colo.; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Chuck, in 2012; her parents; brothers, Richard, Ralph and Leonard Mowen; and great-grandson, Tyler Staver.
