Rollover crash leads to pickup, police car colliding

UPDATE: No serious injuries were reported after a pickup slid out of control on Interstate 380 and slammed into a Cedar Rapids police car this morning.

Avenue SW at 9:15 a.m.
Officers were covering a single-vehicle rollover around 8:45 a.m. when a the northbound pickup struck the back side of the patrol car. Iowa State Patrol Lt. Randy Jones said two officers were standing outside the police car, and two more were inside.
“They saw it coming and got out of the way,” Jones said. “It could have been a lot worse.”
Sgt. Robert Collins was struck by the patrol car after it was struck by the pickup, police said. He has pain in one of his knees and was going to be checked at a clinic.
One of the two officers inside the patrol car “had his bell rung” and was also headed to the clinic, according to Sgt. Cristy Hamblin.
Firefighters and paramedics responded to the scene and checked out the officers and the driver of the pickup. It was not immediately known if there was a passenger in the pickup.
One lane of I-380 northbound was blocked by emergency vehicles and a tow truck.
