UPDATE: For the second day in a row, a vehicle has collided with a Cedar Rapids police car on Interstate 380.
No one was hurt in the most recent crash, which happened around 8:40 a.m. Friday in the southbound lanes of I-380 between the H Avenue and Seventh Street exits. As was the case in Thursday's crash -- which happened at almost exactly the same time -- the officer was investigating an accident when a different vehicle lost control and rear-ended the patrol car.
Sgt. Cristy Hamblin said Officer Antoine Smith was parked on the left shoulder to help a motorist who had spun out when a car driven by Kelsey Sauerbry, 24, of Hiawatha, hit the police car. Sauerbry was cited for failure to maintain control.
On Thursday, officers were covering a single-vehicle rollover near the 33rd Avenue SW overpass around 8:45 a.m. when a northbound pickup struck the back side of the patrol car. Two officers were standing outside the police car, and two more were inside.
Sgt. Robert Collins was struck by the patrol car after the pickup hit it, and had some knee pain. Officer Steve Yardley, who was sitting in the patrol car that was struck, had a bump on his head. Both were seen at a local clinic and released, officials said.
Around 5 1/2 inches of snow fell in Cedar Rapids on Thursday, the first significant snow of the winter season.
