McLean Maxine, McLean Maxine
Maxine McLean, 97, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died May 18, 2013, at Woodland Pond Care Facility in New Platz, N.Y. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 31, at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home with private family services Saturday, June 1, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories.
Born Dec. 20, 1915, in Fort Madison, Iowa, Maxine was the daughter of Cecil J. and Edith Bennett Baxter Jr. She attended Fort Madison High School, Burlington Jr. College and the University of Iowa. She graduated with a degree in music and later received her masters. She married David Denmead on Dec. 20, 1939, in Fort Madison. He died in 1959. Throughout her career, Maxine taught vocal and instrumental music in the Cedar Rapids School District, retiring in 1979. She married Roy McLean on Aug. 24, 1968. Together they began a Shaklee business and traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe.
She was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority, Tau Chapter, the National Education Association, Iowa Music Education, Cedar Rapids Education Association, Beethoven Club, the Cedar Rapids Symphony Guild where she was active in the ticket campaign and contributing to the Suzuki String program.
Survivors include her daughters, Deanna Denmead of Ogden, Utah, Jan (Rick) Novak of Wallkill, N.Y. and Ginny (Terry) Gaston of Cedar Rapids; daughter-in-law, Robin Denmead of Lincoln, Neb.; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy; son, Dr. David Denmead; her parents; two sisters; and a great-grandchild, Henry.
In lieu of flowers, online donations may be made to the Eastern Iowa Arts Academy, American Cancer Society or the American Diabetes Association in her memory.
