Let's celebrate the spirit of volunteerism

On Sept. 11, 2001, our country experienced a terrorist attack, making that day one of the worst in American history. It also brought to light some beautiful examples of the American spirit of helping others.

The attack on the World Trade Center drew an extraordinary, record response from volunteers. Many stayed with the project until the site was cleared on May 2002.

The services that volunteers provided varied, but included evacuating building occupants, treating physical injuries and assisting with emotional distress, dispatching supplies, search and rescue, and debris removal.

On behalf of Leaders in Volunteerism, I thank everyone who donated their time, talents and financial assets to our nation's recovery after the tragedy on Sept. 11. We honor the memory of Sept. 12 as the day when our country pulled together.

Leaders in Volunteerism is an organization formed to develop, stimulate and promote volunteerism in our community. Our membership represents more than 25 non-profit organizations from the Cedar Rapids area and the thousands of volunteers they support.

Together we celebrate the spirit of volunteerism and the impact that volunteers can make in our community during times of crisis and times of joy.
