A 23-year-old Iowa City man was arrested over the weekend after police say his employer – Big Ten Rentals – discovered he's been using the company fuel card to fill up his personal car and his friends' vehicles.
Abram Daniel Frein, who had access to the rental company's fuel credit cards through his employment there, is suspected of buying gas for personal use between February and November of last year, according to a criminal complaint.
Police report they have documentation or video evidence showing Frein making more than 25 unauthorized fuel charges.
“The defendant uses the fuel card to fuel up his personal car, and it also appears he was fueling up friends' vehicles,” according to the complaint.
The alleged unauthorized charges totaled $1,137, according to police.
Big Ten Rentals is an Iowa City-based company that rents out a variety of equipment including, tents, bleachers, flooring, audio and video equipment, and lighting.
Frein, who faces a felony charge of second-degree theft, was released from the Johnson County Jail Monday morning.
