Retz, Doris Toms
Doris Toms Retz, 83, of Manchester, passed away at the Good Neighbor Home on Monday evening, Sept. 24, 2012, after a brief illness.
She was born in Delhi, Iowa, on Dec. 12, 1928, the daughter of Jesse and Josephine (Smith) Toms. Doris graduated from Dundee High School in 1946 and worked in the office at Rath Packing Co. in Waterloo until her marriage. Doris was united in marriage to Milton Retz on Dec. 4, 1949. Together they farmed in Delaware County for over 50 years, retiring to Manchester in 2001.
During her life, Doris was a Sunday school teacher at the Manchester United Methodist Church, a member of the Prairie Township Garden Club, Four Corners Card Club, Manchester Court Whist Card Club, 4-H garden judge, 7th degree Grange member, holding many offices, and many other activities. She and Milton traveled to Washington, D.C., to represent Iowa farm interests and were active Farm Bureau members. Doris was a great cook, even once being featured in the Cedar Rapids Gazette.
Doris will be missed as a wife, mom, sister, best friend, loving grandmother and great-grandmother by her husband, Milton of Manchester; her children, Janet (David) Bergeron of Des Moines, Kathy (Tim) Dolan of Cedar Rapids, David (Terry Meyerson) Retz of Benicia, Calif., and Steven (Carol) of Carol Stream, Ill.; her grandchildren, Jessica (Tony) Walhus of Burr Oak, Jared (Jackie) Rude of Troy Mills, Doria (Scott) Andrews of Cedar Rapids, and Jason Retz of Arcola, Ill.; great-grandchildren, Kailee Slaton, Kelsey Rude, Lance Retz, Saxon Dolan, Brianna Andrews, and Elise Walhus; and her brother, Darl (Linda) Toms of Manchester.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Lila Jean Petlon; and one brother, Merlin Toms.

Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 28, at the United Methodist Church in Manchester, by the Rev. Mike Druhl. Visitation: 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church. Interment: Oakland Cemetery, Manchester. Arrangements are with Leonard-Muller Funeral Home & Crematory in Manchester.
