Milton Westphalen passed away peacefully at the age of 103 on Nov. 27 at Cottage Grove Place. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, Dec. 15, at 1 p.m. in the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Burial to follow the service.
Milton was born in St. Louis to Alfred and Sybilla (Schultes) Westphalen. He was the youngest of three children. He lived much of his life in St. Louis before moving to Cedar Rapids to be closer to family. He was a graduate of St. Louis University where he earned a master's in accounting, then spent five years serving with the U.S. Air Force in World War II. While serving, he married his wife, Elizabeth White. After completing his service in the U.S. Air Force, he worked for several companies in the St. Louis area, retiring as the Chief Financial Officer of Absorbent Cotton Co., a division of Dart Industries.
It was important for Milton to be involved in community activities. Some included First Presbyterian Church of Webster Groves, The Symphony Orchestra of Webster University and most recently as a member of First Presbyterian Church of Cedar Rapids. In retirement, he loved traveling with friends, playing golf and spending winters in Florida. He cherished and loved being with his children and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Westphalen.
Milton will be lovingly remember by his son, Brian Westphalen; and daughter, Marcia (Mike) Pattillo; grandchildren, Betsy Westphalen, Peter (Melinda) Westphalen, Robert (Melissa) Pattillo and Maggi (Alex) Pattillo; great-grandchildren, Jonah, Emma and Mara Westphalen, and Fiona and Nico Lipsitt.
Milton will be greatly missed for his kindness, generosity and love for others.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the First Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids in Milton's name.
