Block, Mayor Gerald J. 'Red'
Mayor Gerald J. “Red” Block, 79, of Guttenberg, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque. Arrangements are being handled by Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 207 S. First St., Guttenberg, where the family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 8, and one hour before services Wednesday at the church. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Guttenberg, with the Rev. Marvin Bries officiating. Interment will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Guttenberg.
He was born the son of Fred and Irene Block on July 31, 1931, in Guttenberg. Red received his education locally and served his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean conflict. He was in law enforcement for many years, serving as Clayton County Sheriff and Guttenberg Police Chief. He also drove for Standard Forwarding Trucking and was mayor of Guttenberg at the time of his death.
On Jan. 29, 1955, he was united in marriage with Adele Hoeger, who passed away Dec. 7, 2009; On Aug. 28, 2010, he was united in marriage with Jerri Herman Geuder at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Guttenberg.
Survivors include his wife, Jerri; one stepdaughter, Karen Geuder and David Schlueter of Guttenberg; two stepsons, Doug Geuder of Gutenberg and Dean (Angie) Geuder and their children, Conner and Madison Geuder, of Cedar Rapids; Godsons, Donnie Schaefer, Michael Schaefer and Nathan Schaefer; nephews, Mike Handke, Jim Handke, Kevin Hoeger and Randy Hoeger; and his dog, Pepper.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Adele; and his brother, Harold “Joby” Tindell.
