Betty Jane Schroeder Hainstock, 89, of Maquoketa, passed away Thursday, Feb. 16, 2017, at Clarence Nursing Home in Clarence.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Feb. 21, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Lost Nation at 10:30 a.m. Visitation will be Monday, Feb. 20, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the church. Burial will be in Lost Nation Cemetery. Lahey Funeral Home is assisting the family at this time.
Betty was born May 15, 1927, to Carl and Martha (Rechterman) Schroeder. She was born and raised on the family farm west of Lost Nation. She attended Mount Ida country school, kindergarten through eighth grade. She went on to Lost Nation High School for grades 9-12. Betty and her friends sometimes had to make the 3-mile walk to school. During World War II, there was a teacher shortage, and the government offered a six-week course to get a teaching certificate. Betty received the teaching certificate and taught kindergarten through grade 8 at her old country school, Mount Ida. She also worked as postmaster in Toronto and helped in Lost Nation, retiring in 1992.
Betty married Donald Hainstock on Oct. 19, 1947, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. They were married for 66 years. Mutual friends introduced Betty and Don. Betty and Don farmed side by side on a farm west of Lost Nation, where they raised their two sons, Steve and Ray. Don passed away May 17, 2014.
Betty had lifelong friends from childhood to today. Some of these friends were in the pinochle club they belonged to for about 60 years. She enjoyed golfing, crocheting and counted cross stitch, among many other activities.
She loved her family dearly.
Those left to cherish her memories are her children, Steve (Becky) Hainstock of Lost Nation and Ray (Julie) Hainstock of Wyoming, grandchildren, Jeremy Hainstock of Marion, Travis Hainstock of Lost Nation, Joelle Hainstock of Burleson, Texas, Josh (Rosa) Hainstock of St. Michael, Minn., and Chelsea (Adam) Sheppard of Monticello; great-grandchildren, Emily and Damon Hainstock, Cruz and Cash Sheppard and Kirvin Hainstock; sister, Judy Price of Tacoma, Wash.; sister-in-law, Jeanette Schroeder of Lost Nation; sister-in-law, Ethyl Mae (Bud) Kruckenberg of Wisconsin; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, Paul; and niece, Daphne.
