1922 - 2011
The Rev. Eugene Howell Hancock, a gifted pastor and an exceptional preacher who served the largest Methodist churches with distinction in Iowa, died Saturday, Nov. 26, 2011, in Cedar Rapids. He was 89. Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2, at White Funeral Home, 400 First St. West, Independence. The memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Dec. 10 at St. Paul's Methodist Church, 1340 Third Ave. SE, Cedar Rapids. The family will receive visitors an hour before the service.
From 1951 to 1987, Rev. Hancock served five Iowa Methodist congregations in Mapleton, Independence, Iowa City, Des Moines and Cedar Rapids.
He is survived by his wife, Marna Hancock of Independence; brothers, Thomas and Byford Hancock of Villa Grove, Ill.; daughters, Lora Lea Edwards of Cedar Rapids, and Lyn Nell Hancock of Montclair, N.J.;, son, Jeff Hancock of Independence; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that gifts be sent to The Eugene Hancock Scholarship at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, or the Foundations at First Methodist Church in Independence, Iowa, or St. Paul's United Methodist in Cedar Rapids.
