The Iowa Department of Transportation is reporting that road conditions have not improved much overnight, but visibility has improved significantly in many locations.
The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for blowing and drifting snow, which will remain in effect until 10 a.m. Approximately two-thirds of the state is covered by the advisory. The western 1/3 of the state is no longer under an advisory.
Gusty northwest winds of 20 to 40 mph will continue through mid morning causing considerable surface blowing and drifting of snow. The blowing snow will cause roads to remain snow covered and slick. Travel is still not advised throughout most of the state. Towing bans remain in effect where travel is not advised.
Cedar Rapids road conditions
Interstate 380 is reported as partially covered in snow or ice in Linn, Benton and Johnson counties. Other roads including Interstate 80 and Highways 30 and 218 are also partially covered.
“People just need to be cautious,” said Sgt. Joe Cerruto, of the Cedar Rapids Police Department. “The wind has been blowing all night, so there may be some areas that need to be addressed.”
If you become stranded on the road and need emergency services, call 911. Road conditions are continually updated at www.511ia.org or by calling 511 from any phone.
Travel not advised
The Iowa State Patrol Division advises Iowans that travel continues to not be advised across much of Iowa today due to blowing snow, low visibility, and drifting caused by yesterday's blizzard.
Interstate 35 from Ames to the Minnesota line continues to be closed. Interstate 35 northbound is blocked at the 107 mile marker in Story County with a jackknifed semi.
Two injury accidents have been reported on I-80 in Jasper county at mile marker 173.
