Villanova coaches have to cringe when they hear one of their recruits is meeting with the University of Iowa.
The Hawkeyes swooped in and snagged Greg Castillo a few years ago. Tuesday night, Troy (N.Y.) High School running back Jordan Canzeri jumped at the chance to play in the Big Ten, according to the Albany Times Union.
For the second consecutive night, Iowa picked up a pair of recruits. Philadelphia linebacker Marcus Collins (Monsignor Bonner High School) also committed. This gives Iowa 24 recruits, but only 22 likely will sign their national letters of intent today.
Collins told the Delaware County Daily Times that he will likely sign his letter of intent next week. Of the four recruits Iowa nabbed Tuesday, Collins and Ohio safety Johnny Lowdermilk hadn't yet visited the UI campus.
Also, Texas wide receiver Austin Vincent told HawkeyeReport.com that he needs a higher score on the SAT before he can sign with the Hawkeyes. He intends to sign when he gets the score.
Canzeri, who rushed for 2,048 yards and 33 touchdowns as a senior, originally committed to Villanova (an FCS school), but had a change of heart after visiting Iowa City. He also had offers from UConn and Indiana.
Canzeri was named the Times Union's large school offensive player of the year. The 5-foot-9, 177-pounder is Iowa's fourth running back in the 2011 class. He joins Rodney Coe, Mika'il McCall and Damon Bullock.
Collins told the Times that Iowa is bringing him in as a linebacker.
“I've played all positions at linebacker,” Collins said. “In my high school career I haven't played any other position besides linebacker that I'm familiar with. I can also play strong safety when I need to.”
Collins also is a hurdler and a 215-pound wrestler. Army also offered Collins.
“He is the best linebacker I've coached in 10 years at Bonner,” Friars coach Tom Oropeza said at the end of last season.
Earlier Tuesday, Lowdermilk and Bullock committed to Iowa.
The national signing period began at midnight.
The only known recruit Iowa is still in the hunt for is DeMatha High School (Hyattsville, Md.) defensive tackle Darian Cooper.
