Dozens of people flowed in and out of Martin Davis' home Tuesday during the search for the missing snowmobile rider.
Friends, family members and strangers are trying to piece together why the Cedar Rapids man went missing after saying he was going out for a ride Sunday.
“Marty told his girlfriend he would be back at 5:30 and asked what she wanted for dinner,” said Tracy Reitmeier, a girlfriend of one of Davis' three children. “He hasn't been back.”
Davis, 52, lives on Club Road SW, about three miles north of Shueyville. He was last seen at 1 p.m. Sunday at Chappy's Dry Dock in Shueyville.
Volunteers on snowmobiles took to the trails in subzero temperatures, from Cedar Rapids and Ely into Johnson County. Some close to Davis said he may have been headed to Bobber's Grill in North Liberty.
What makes the search especially difficult is the large number of places to look. There are seemingly endless snowmobile trails along the border of Linn and Johnson counties.
“It's hundreds and hundreds of miles of trails out there,” said Todd Minor, who spent hours Tuesday on his sled searching for Davis. “You can't see everything from the road, though.”
Minor asked for anyone living in the area to check their land or barns for any sign of Davis.
“We're just going to try and figure out what he was thinking,” searcher Kirk Woltman said.
The Johnson County Sheriff's Office said it is investigating Davis' disappearance. A state patrol aircraft flew over North Liberty for a while Tuesday to aid in the search.
Volunteers planned to resume the search this morning.
