Marian Martha Winkie, 84, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Monday, Feb. 27, 2017, at Mercy Medical Center with her loving family by her side. Visitation will be held at a later date.
Marian was born Oct. 7, 1932, to Clarence and Martha Dvorak, in Iowa City, Iowa. She was united in marriage to Sayre Eugene Winkie on May 22, 1954, in Iowa City. She was known as the neighborhood mom because she was always caring for others. On warm summer days, Marian could be found outside tending her gardens. She was also known for her love of giraffes and lighthouses. Marian was a very active member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. She was in the choir and assisted with many funeral luncheons.
Marian is survived by her children, Michael Winkie, Susan (Chris) Sexton, Cyndy (Randy) Ward and Becky (Bob) Peery; grandchildren, Joshua and Jacob Winkie, CJ and Daniel Sexton, Tom, Brittany, Cassidy and Noah Ward, and Devon (Tom) Bruntmyer; great-grandchildren, Maddie and Ayden Bruntmyer; her brother, David (BJ) Dvorak; son-in-law, Bob Schaffer; special friends, Betty Raher and Marie Morrison; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Sayre Winkie; her parents; her son, Joe (Cathee) Winkie; daughter, Julia Winkie-Schaffer; and siblings, Bernice Cahill and Paul Dvorak.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been set up in Marian's name.
