Revenue needed to pay for services
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Apr. 30, 2011 10:52 am
I recently retired from Iowans for Tax Relief after 30 years as vice chairman. During those years, I was known for promoting smaller government and less taxes.
I give my strong support in favor of extending the local-option sales tax. My position may surprise some people and I understand that. The reasons for my support are the need for flood protection for our city, money for streets and help to hold down property tax increases.
Forty years ago, as a state senator, I fully realized, as much as I wanted to hold down taxes, government must have revenue to provide services and that revenue must come from taxes.
I voted yes three weeks ago. It was not a difficult decision. I voted yes for my grandchildren and future generations.
