Eda Barbara Schanbacher, 98, of Solon, formerly of Atkins, died Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2016, at Windmill Manor in Tiffin following an extended illness.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church in Atkins, with the Rev. Douglas Woltemath officiating. Interment will be at St. Stephen's Cemetery near Atkins. Visitation also will be held at the church. Friends may register from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday.

A memorial fund has been established for St. Stephen's Lutheran Church or a charity of the donor's choice.

Eda was born Dec. 17, 1917, in Atkins to George W. and Anna (Gerhold) Rinderknecht. She graduated from Atkins High School in 1934. On Sept. 14, 1940, she was united in marriage to Wilbert "Bill" Schanbacher at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church in Atkins. The couple farmed in Linn County until 1973, when they moved to Solon. Wilbert preceded Eda in death on Oct. 3, 2002.

While living in Atkins, Eda was a member of St. Stephen's Lutheran Church, where she served as past president of the Ladies Society, taught Sunday school for many years and was a member of the Christian Couples Club. She also was a member of Atkins Women's Club.

She is survived by her daughters, Barbara Schanbacher of Iowa City and Patricia (Ivan) Lauck of West Bend; her son, John (Eileen) Schanbacher of Atkins; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by five brothers and four sisters.

Eda's family wants to thank the staff at Meadowview in Cedar Rapids and Windmill Manor in Tiffin for their compassionate care of her these past four years.
