Baird, Russell
Russell Baird, 92, of Cedar Rapids, died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids. Family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Cedar Rapids. Burial at 1 p.m. Thursday at Odd Fellows Cemetery, Bloomfield, Iowa.
Survivors include children, Gary (Joye) Baird of Cedar Rapids, Deborah Osborn of Cedar Rapids, Marla (Craig) Hite of Mansfield, Texas, and Carla Collett of Eldon; brother, Charles Baird of Ottumwa; sister, Frances Boyer of Arizona; eight grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Russ was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty; infant daughter, Sherelle Baird; brother, Scott (Vada) Baird; brother-in-law, Carl Boyer; and sister-in-law, Doris Baird.
Russ was born March 29, 1920, in Bloomfield, Iowa, son of Charles and Iva (Latta) Baird. He graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1937. Russ worked for the city until he was drafted for the United States Army. He served in the European Theatre during World War II. Upon his discharge, Russ returned to Bloomfield before moving to Cedar Rapids in 1955. He worked for the City of Cedar Rapids in Water Pollution Control before retiring in 1984 as a supervisor. Russ was a member of the American Legion in Bloomfield. He enjoyed playing cards, fishing and bowling in his younger years. Russ loved time with his grand and great-grandchildren.
