Johnson, Marilyn J.
Marilyn J. Johnson, 88, of Marion, died Sunday, July 24, 2011, in her home. Services: 3 p.m. Saturday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Mike Morgan. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids and after 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the chapel. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Survivors include her sons, Kim D. Johnson of Cedar Rapids and Kris B. Johnson of Menomonee Falls, Wis.; and her grandchildren, Courtney Daniels of Philadelphia, Pa., Charles Johnson, Tyler Johnson and Spencer Johnson, all of Cedar Rapids, and Ellie Johnson and Mollie Johnson, both of Menomonee Falls, Wis.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Donald L. Johnson; a daughter, Anita Daniels; a sister, Shirley Wallace; and a brother, Gene Balcom.
Marilyn was born Nov. 5, 1922, in Caledonia, Ill., the daughter of Charles and Jennie (Kvarme) Balcom. In 1936, the family moved to Marion, where Marilyn helped her parents run a farm and dairy delivery service. She married Donald L. Johnson on Sept. 7, 1947, in Marion. Marilyn worked at the A&W in Marion, the Marion Train Depot, Collins Radio, was a legal secretary for a Marion law firm, and a secretary for the superintendent of Marion Schools.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Marion, where she was active in various administrative committees and active in United Methodist Women. She enjoyed flowers, gardening, writing poetry and playing the guitar. Her favorite pastimes were spending time with her grandchildren and taking trips to the cabin on the lake in Wisconsin.
She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
