Shipman, Don H.
Don H. Shipman passed away peacefully on Dec. 20, 2011, in Springfield, Mo., surrounded by his beloved family.
He was born Sept. 8,1923, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, to Fremont and Mary Shipman. A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in the south seas, completed his education at William Penn College, graduating with a degree in education in 1948, and later received a master's degree in counseling from Northeast Missouri State University. He married Miriam D. Walthall in Vermillion Grove, Ill., on July 31,1949. They lived, loved and shared the joy of raising three children together in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Don is survived by his wife, Miriam Shipman, Springfield, Mo.; son, Wade Shipman, wife Shanne, and granddaughter Cara, of Springfield, Mo.; daughter Leslee Barbato and husband Mark of Frederick, Md.; sonTodd Shipman and partner Brad Bernstein of Minneapolis; grandson Dustin Grabe and wife Sarah of Minneapolis; and granddaughter Megan (Grabe) Wright and husband Andy of Arlington Va.
Don, a consummate education professional, provided guidance to youth in the Cedar Rapids schools from 1961-1986, also working summers to support the YMCA and local park facilities. Passionate about his hobbies, he enriched his life with golf, trout fishing, music, ballroom dancing, reading and a deeper understanding of life.
He will always be rememberedas a husband and father who made sacrifices to give them a quality life that he felt they deserved. Honest and true, he exuded a genuine and constant strength to the people in his life. Memories of Don will live forever as a man of integrity, deep loyalty and unwavering love and commitment to those fortunate enough to be a part of his life.
The family invites you to join a celebration of his life at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 7, 2012, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 1340 Third Ave. SE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52403. Graveside services to follow at Forest Cemetery, Oskaloosa, Iowa.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made in his name to the Cedar Rapids YMCA.
