Horace Wayne Garvey Sr., 71, of Topeka, Kan., died Thursday, March 27, 2014, at his home.
He was born Oct. 26, 1942, in Paducah, Ky., the son of George and Viola (Barrow) Garvey. Wayne retired from the United States Air Force, serving from Nov. 18, 1959, until Nov. 30, 1979. After retiring, he began a second career as a corrections officer for the state of Kansas, retiring in 1997. He married Donna Artzer on June 26, 1965 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. She survives.
Other survivors include his children, Wayne Garvey II, Brian Garvey and Traci Forman and her husband, Robert, all of Topeka; stepfather, John Knowlton; siblings, Delores Swyers, Sue Ford and Ruth Heiken; fiveive grandchildren, Amanda, Codi, Morgan, Josey Garvey and Hannah Forman; two great-grandsons, Kaden and Jayce Baber, also survive.
Wayne will lie in state after 2 p.m. Monday, March 31, at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 4 until 6 p.m. A parish rosary and vigil service will begin at 6 p.m. Cremation will follow. Graveside inurnment will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Leavenworth National Cemetery. Prior to the graveside service Wednesday, all are invited to join the family for lunch beginning at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church Hall. Following the lunch, there will be a procession to the cemetery.
