Peter Verteiko, 95, of Cedar Rapids, passed away after complications of cancer on Friday, May 16, 2014, at his home. Services: 2 p.m. Monday, May 19, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Family will greet friends from 1:30 p.m. until services Monday at the funeral home. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, with military rites.
Survivors include his children, Sandra Verteiko, Suzanne (Mark) Briceland and Peter (Beverly) Verteiko; six grandchildren, Michael Johnson, Brandy Johnson, Matthew (Kris) Briceland, Farrah Fuehrer, Marie Briceland and Daniel Briceland; nine great-grandchildren, Keelea (Dontrel), Khloe, Gavin, Kallie, Sheldon, Abby, Falon, Kirrah and Uriah; and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty Jean Verteiko; two daughters, Marie and Debra; and siblings, Anne, Frank and Lukash.
Peter was born July 5, 1918, in Cedar Rapids, son of Daniel and Anastasia (Zuk) Verteiko. He served in the United States Army, 14th Cavalry Regiment, during World War II. Peter married Betty Lindquist in Iowa City on July 30, 1949. She later passed away on Jan. 17, 2006. He worked at the Rock Island Railroad.
Peter was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He will be greatly missed.
