Miss Teen Iowa Spirit Brandi Schmidt paid the Kernels a visit Friday evening, greeting the crowd before the team's ballgame against the Lansing Lugnuts.
Schmidt, 17, welcomed the crowd during pregame festivities and signed autographs on the concourse during the game as part of her tour across Iowa.
After earning her title in December 2010, Schmidt is required to make a certain amount of public appearances as part of her duties of her position.
"I really enjoy interacting with the community," Schmidt said. "I like meeting new people and hearing about their experiences."
The Iowa Spirit Pageants are a state qualifier for the American Spirit Pageant. A relatively new contest in the pageant world, the American Spirit Pageant believes in helping women to gain self-confidence, meet interesting and influential people, and gain a greater social awareness. It also focuses on keeping the "American Spirit" alive and vibrant.
Appearing at the game had special meaning for Schmidt. It was Clear Creek Amana schools night at the ballpark as well as Girl Scout night. Schmidt attends Clear Creek Amana High School and is a former Girl Scout.
Miss Teen Iowa Spirit said she enjoys meeting the little girls for the first time and seeing their faces light up with excitement.
"Having the title is a lot of fun, but it also takes a lot of responsibility," she said. "A lot of the little kids look up to you. That's something that really inspires me."
