Jeanette Vernamae Hamer, 84, of Cedar Rapids, passed away at the Hospice House of Mercy on March 6, 2017. Services: 10 a.m. Friday at St. Pius X Catholic Church by the Rev. Phil Thompson. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery. A vigil service with the praying of the rosary will be held at Teahen Funeral Home, where friends may visit with the family from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. Friday at the church.
Jeanette is survived by her husband of 60 years, Morgan; four sons, Douglas (Denise Alger), Michael (Paula), Mark (Sue) and Gary (Christy), all of Cedar Rapids; and one daughter, Teresa Smith (Larry) of Cedar Rapids; two brothers, Eldon (Doris) Knipper and Leonard (Grace) Knipper of Arlington; eight grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Betty Knipper and Grace Knipper, both of Edgewood; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her son, Patrick; three brothers, Aloysius, Raymond and Alfred; and her sister, Germaine.
Jeanette was born Feb. 4, 1933, in Petersburg, the daughter of Frank and Elizabeth (Nefzger) Knipper. She graduated from Winthrop High School in 1951 and married Morgan Hamer on Nov. 10, 1956, in Masonville. Jeanette was a full-time mom to her children and provided daycare services for 13 years. She was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church and St. Mary Circle (card club). She loved to garden, bowl and quilt, along with other crafts. She will be remembered as the "Cookie Lady" at the jam sessions in Wagon City, Mission, Texas.
Instead of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha.
