Sloane, Ardy
CEDAR RAPIDS - With the saddest of hearts the family of longtime Cedar Rapids, Iowa resident and Westby, Wis.-area native Ardy Sloane shares the news of her sudden passing at her home in Cedar Rapids on Tuesday, Sept. 21. 2010. She was born in La Crosse, Wis., on Jan. 15, 1944, and spent her youth in Vernon County. She was a 1962 graduate of Westby High School and a 1996 graduate of The University of Iowa. After her graduation from Iowa, Ardy began teaching English and humanities at North-Linn High School in Troy Mills, where she was looking forward to an enriching and rewarding school year when she passed unexpectedly.
Ardy enjoyed sharing her love of learning, literature, music, sewing doll clothes and baseball. She found happiness in the company of her dear girlfriends of over 60 years, countless road trips to share time with her mom, and the contagious laughter and smiles of her grandchildren.
Ardy is survived by her children: Todd Weissenberger (Cynthia Hernandez) of Albuquerque, N.M., and their son, August Weissenberger; Bradley Weissenberger (Laurie) of Grand Haven, Mich., and their daughters, Kate and Anna; Carolyn (James) Ferraioli of Whitefish Bay, Wis., and their daughters, Sloane, Luca and Mona; and Jeffrey Weissenberger (Sheri) of Indianapolis and their children, Alexis and Jacob; her brother, Terry Sloane (Sally) of Stoddard, Wis.; her dear childhood friend, Marilyn Packard, and several lifelong friends from the Westby area. She is also survived by a wonderful circle of extended family, friends, students and teaching colleagues, on each of whose lives she had a deep and lasting influence.
She was preceded in death by her older brother, Armin Sloane in 1984; her father, Archie Sloane in 1990; and her mother, Carol Sloane in May of this year.
To honor our mom's love of reading, in lieu of flowers, a financial donation may be made in her memory to the family, c/o Carolyn Ferraioli, 6160 North Bay Ridge Ave., Whitefish Bay, WI 53217. Her grandchildren will purchase their favorite books for distribution to children in need.
Friends may call on Saturday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the Vosseteig Funeral Home, 708 S. Hwy 14 in Westby. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. at North Coon Prairie Lutheran Church, (Hwy 27 between Westby and Cashton, Wis.). Pastor John Stennes-Spidahl will officiate. Our mom will be laid to rest near her mother and father, Archie and Carol Sloane, in the church cemetery. Following services, Ardy's family invites all of her fans to celebrate her life with them at Davidson Park in Westby.
