Mearl C. Fowlie, 102, of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., formerly of the Stanwood/ Clarence area, died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2014, in Arizona. There will be no local services. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mearl was born on a farm in the Stanwood/ Clarence vicinity on Oct. 29, 1911, to J. Wilber Fowlie and Lida Clay Fowlie. He attended the Stanwood and Clarence schools and graduated in 1930 from Olin High School, starting there in his freshman year. After graduation, he worked for various farmers and, in 1934, he decided to try city life. He chose Cedar Rapids as his hometown and had lived there until he moved to Lake Havasu, Ariz.
He was an active member of Central Park Presbyterian Church since 1956, having served as deacon and elder off and on for many years.
Mearl worked for the Cedar Rapids Engineering Co., now known as Kwik-Way, of Marion for 34 years and retired from there in 1974. After his retirement, he spent some very pleasant years as an associate of Armstrong's Department Store, working in the display department.
His children are Sharon Etchells (deceased), formerly of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Steven of Lake Havasu, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by an adopted son, Jerald L. Fowlie.
