Childers, Betty Jane (Longerbeam)
Betty Jane (Longerbeam) Childers, 88, of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, Aug. 21, 2009. Private graveside service: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Arrangements with Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include nephews and niece, Ronald (Joyce) Longerbeam, Harlan (Lillian) Sailor and Linda (Don) Magnuson; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon; sister, Ruby Sailor; and brothers, Virgil, Seward and her twin brother, Bob Longerbeam.
Betty was born July 31, 1921, the daughter of Andrew and Grace (Hamilton) Longerbeam, in Lisbon, Iowa. She served with the United States Army in the WAC during World War II. On Jan. 22, 1943, Betty was united in marriage to Vernon Childers in Kahoka, Mo. He died Dec. 17, 1990. For 31 years, she worked for Cryovac. Betty was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, VFW Post 788, American Legion Post 5 and the American Bowling Association. She enjoyed golf, taking walks and gambling.
A memorial fund has been established.
The family would like to give a special thanks to St. Luke's Hospital, St. Luke's Hospice, ManorCare and Winslow House Care Center for their support and care given to Betty.
