Mark Adkins/Wartburg College
Jan. 31, 2011 7:48 am
MOUNT VERNON – Sparked by strong shooting in all three phases, Wartburg College earned an Iowa Conference road win at Cornell Jan. 29.
Coach Dick Peth's Knights (7-12 overall, 2-9 IIAC) hit 53.8 percent from the field, an even 50 percent from beyond the arc, and better than 82 percent from the charity stripe in the 81-76 decision. Junior forward Jordan Sathoff, who entered the game on a big offensive roll, kept it going with 29 points and 11 rebounds. It was his second consecutive and fifth double-double of the year.
Sathoff had plenty of help on the offensive end. Junior forward Cole Danielson of Marshalltown compiled his 11th consecutive double-figure scoring game with 18 points. Kirk Sidey of Greenfield, also a junior forward for Wartburg, added 12 points.
The Knights trailed the Rams (6-14, 1-10 IIAC) by as much as nine early but kept themselves close down the stretch of the opening half and trailed 35-30 at the break. A trey from Danielson at the 14:38 mark of the second frame gave them the lead but Cornell took off on a 19-11 run to hold a 63-56 advantage with 6:53 left. From that point, the Orange and Black scored 25 of the game's next 35 points to go in front for good.
The Knights continue conference play with an 8 p.m tipoff at Luther Wednesday, Feb. 2.
NOTES: Sathoff's hitting 50 percent or better from the field in seven of his last eight appearances. … Danielson's double-figure scoring streak has been aided by his deft touch from three-point range. He's hit at least once in each of the last 11 games with multiples in nine contests. … Sophomore guard Trevor Dismore of Vinton has made the most of recent playing opportunities. His scoring average is up over a point (1.0-2.1) over the last three games.
