Woman endangering kids deserved jail

Did I read this correctly? Probation for the woman who purposely drove her car, containing her two children, into the Cedar River last March ('Women who drove car with kids inside into Cedar River avoids jail,” Dec. 4).
Being on meth isn't an excuse for trying to kill your children. She's been sober eight months. She's in drug court; of course she's sober. Any kind of addiction takes years - usually the rest of your life - to remain sober.
Those kids are going to be traumatized for the rest of their lives, and that's just from this event. Who knows what they've lived through at home. Even the people who rescued them are having nightmares and can't sleep, and they are adults.
Probation is a slap on the hand for this. What kind of judges are we swearing into our courts? The whole system obviously needs an overhaul.
