Donald (Don) Spurgin, 86, of Apache Junction, Ariz., passed away peacefully on Jan. 5, 2017, surrounded by loved ones.
Don was born March 2, 1930, in Burlington, Iowa, to Cora and Harold Spurgin. He grew up in Albia, Iowa, and graduated from Albia Community High School. Don served in the U.S. Army. After his discharge from the military, he farmed in the Albia area. Later, Don lived in Keystone and Cedar
Rapids. He worked at Amana Refrigeration, until he retired and relocated to Apache Junction.
Don's true passion was square dancing. He worked as a square dance caller for nearly 50 years. Don taught square dance lessons for clubs throughout the Cedar Rapids area and called dances in Iowa and several other states. He enjoyed traveling, golfing and spending time with friends and family.
Donald is survived by his wife, Jan Spurgin of Apache Junction; children, Patti Peterson, David Spurgin, Kathy (Duane) Turner and Cheryl (Kenny) Holub, all of the Cedar Rapids area; stepchildren, Guy (Mary) Stanley of Anamosa and Kelly (Stuart) Bell of Bonners Ferry, Idaho; sister, Arlene (Charles) Jacobs of Albia; and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Cora Bates; his father, Harold Spurgin; stepfather, Johnny Bates; and stepson, Chad Langfitt.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Jan. 21 at Superstition Buttes Clubhouse in Apache Junction with Chaplain David Walker officiating. Burial will be at Murdoch-Linwood Cemetery in Cedar Rapids at a later date.
