Albert T. VanThournout Sr., 79, of Victor, died Thursday, April 10, 2014, at Rose Haven Nursing Home in Marengo from a short battle with cancer. Services will be 10 a.m. Monday, April 14, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Belle Plaine, with Deacon Joe Behounek officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Hrabak Funeral Home in Belle Plaine, where there will be a Scripture service at 6:30 p.m. followed by a rosary. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Victor, with military rites by the Victor American Legion.
Albert is survived by his wife, Elaine; daughter, Annette VanThournout of Parnell; son, Albert Jr. of Marengo; sisters, Teresa (Dean) Roudabush of Atkins and Louise (Don) Miner of Luzerne; brothers, Julian (Ruth Ann) of Texas, Mike of Van Horne and Chuck (Kathy) of Hartwick.
Albert was born to August and Florence VanWaus VanThournout on Sept. 4, 1934, in rural Victor. He attended Hartford No. 8 Country School. He helped his father with farming until he entered the Navy in 1954. He attained the rank of TM3 and served on the USS Tingey during the Korean conflict. He was discharged in 1958. On Jan. 9, 1960, he married Elaine Novak at St. Michael's Church. They farmed near Brooklyn and Belle Plaine and then moved to the family farm near Victor in 1968. He worked at sale barns and most recently at the Marengo Publishing Co., retiring June 1, 2007.
Albert was a member of St. Michael's Church and the Victor American Legion.
He loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, gardening, dancing, reading and playing cards.
Albert was preceded in death by an infant son; parents; brother, Robert; and infant twin sisters, Mary and Margaret.
A memorial fund has been established.
