Nov. 9, 2016 5:43 pm
All eight judges up for retention in Iowa's 6th Judicial District were retained Tuesday with approval from at least 75 percent of voters for each candidate.
Judges Lars G. Anderson (75.9 percent to retain), Christopher L. Bruns (76.1), Chad A. Kepros (76.0), Kevin McKeever (76.2), Sean W. McPartland (76.3), Ian K. Thornhill (75.6), Jason A. Burns (78.3) and Susan Flaherty (79.7) retain seats in the district, which covers Benton, Iowa, Johnson, Jones, Linn and Tama counties.
Also, unofficial vote totals from the Secretary of State's Office show Iowa's three Supreme Court justices - Chief Justice Mark S. Cady (65.3) and associate justices Daryl L. Hecht (64.1) and Brent R. Appel (64.4) - retained their seats.
The four Iowa Court of Appeals judges - David R. Danilson (69.8), Richard H. Doyle (70.1), Amanda Potterfield (70.7) and Gayle Nelson Vogel (71.1) - also are keeping their seats on the bench.
All other District Court judges also were retained, according to unofficial vote totals.
Iowa judges are selected under the judicial merit selection system in which judges are appointed by the governor after going through a selection process by a judicial nominating commission. Voters then have the chance to decide during the next general election following a judge's appointment whether to retain or remove the judge from the bench.
