Jewel Hampton: 3 TDs in Southern Illinois debut
Mike Hlas Sep. 5, 2011 2:24 pm
Jewel Hampton made his debut as a Southern Illinois running back a good one. He carried the ball 14 times for 64 yards and three touchdowns in the 17th-ranked Salukis' 38-10 win over Southeast Missouri State.
And Hampton was only third on his team in rushing yards, as SIU averaged 5.2 yards per carry.
It was Hampton's first game in almost a year because of a torn ACL he suffered at Arizona as an Iowa Hawkeye. Things unraveled for him at Iowa, and he left the program last winter. He was eligible to play right away at the FCS level, so off to Southern Illinois he went.
Hampton rushed for 463 yards and seven TDs as an Iowa freshman in 2008. He missed the 2009 season with a knee injury, and only played in two games last season before another knee injury. In his only full game last season, he carried 20 times for 84 yards and a TD against Iowa State.
Southern Illinois plays at Mississippi Saturday.
Iowa used to have veteran running back depth. Adam Robinson, Brandon Wegher, Hampton ... gone, gone, gone. College kids.
