Fire destroys home at Kirkwood Estates

A fire rendered a manufactured home uninhabitable Wednesday afternoon at the Kirkwood Estates in Cedar Rapids.

At 3:08 p.m. the Cedar Rapids Fire Department received a report of a fire at 474 Drake St. SW.

When firefighters arrived on scene they discovered smoke coming from the eaves. Initial reports said a person may have been inside the home, but firefighters later learned the homeowner, Valerie Henson, 58, was out walking her dog at the time.

A cat died in the fire, but no other injuries were reported.

Fire department officials say the fire likely started in a back bedroom and there was smoke damage to the bedroom, hallway, and bathroom. Officials declared the home uninhabitable.

The Red Cross was helping Henson.

The fire is still under investigation.
