Black, Delbert
Delbert Black, 98, of 320 S. Dubuque St., Iowa City, died Tuesday, March 30, 2010, at Mercy Hospice Care in Iowa City. Delbert was cremated. The family will greet friends from 10:30 a.m. until service time at Lensing's Oak Hill, 210 Holiday Rd., Coralville. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Lensing's Oak Hill. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City.
Delbert was born Aug. 31, 1911, in Eldon, Iowa, to Orville and Carrie (Richardson) Black. He married Iona Anna Richter on Dec. 2, 1931, in Rock Island, Ill. He farmed near Columbus Junction on the same farm for 24 years. He was also employed by Eclipse Lumberyard and drove a school bus for Columbus Junction for 12 years. Moving to Iowa City in 1957, he was employed by Owens Brush Co., where he worked small stores for 14 years until his retirement.
Delbert was a member of the United Methodist Church in Columbus Junction.
Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Jons of Coralville; six grandchildren, Jacklyn (Jons) Hardy, Jennifer (Jons) Fitzpatrick and her husband, Shawn, Jason Jons and his wife, Michelle, Anne (Black) Ferguson and her husband, Jeff, Deborah (Black) Wohlers and Christine (Black) Gordon and her husband, Mark; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Iona; a son, Delbert Black Jr.; a son-in-law, Lyle Jons; and two sisters, Gail Keckler and Mary Bell.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice.
