Colony, Carl K.
Carl K. Colony, 81, of Iowa City, died Monday, April 16, 2012, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, April 20, at Grace United Methodist Church in Tiffin, with burial following at Oak Hill Cemetery in Tiffin. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City.
Carl Kyte Colony was born June 27, 1930, near Tiffin, Iowa, the son of Arthur and Marie (Brant) Colony. He graduated from Iowa City High School with the class of 1948. On April 10, 1951, Carl was united in marriage to Mildred Jane Brown in Shueyville.
A lifelong resident of this area, Carl engaged in a variety of occupations, including farming, working for Owens Brush, operating a DX station in Coralville, working as a guard at the Oakdale Correctional Facility, in addition to owning and operating Aunt Jane's Dairy Kitchen with his family. In 1973, Carl found his calling when he became a Realtor, and he retired from Colony Real Estate Co. in 1989.
Carl loved the public and it only took a few minutes for Carl to make a stranger feel as though they were longtime friends. He will be remembered by many, especially his grandchildren, for his entertaining storytelling. Carl enjoyed the outdoors as a sportsman, mushrooming, and working with his “big boy toys” on the family farm. But most of all, his family came first in his book. Recently celebrating 61 years of marriage to Jane, Carl was also the proud father of four daughters, grandfather to eight, and great-grandfather to eight more, all of whom he loved very much!
Left to mourn his passing are his wife, Jane; his daughters, Cathy (Thomas) Bunnell of Lisbon, Beverly (Stephen) Seat of Overland Park, Kan., Barbara (Jim) Tandy of Oxford, and Cyndi (Stephen) Mick of Waverly; eight grandchildren, Tina Webster (A.C. Regier), Tom (Kim) Tandy, Ashley Seat, John (Jami) Tandy, Angie Seat, Julia (Jason) Bulechek, Valerie (Daniel) Aguilera and Natalie Mick; eight great-grandchildren, Drew, Jackson, Trevor, Delaney, Alexa, Alayna, Paxon and Audrey; his cousin, Jack Colony of Coralville; and his four-footed family, CJ and Jack.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Shirley Colony.
Memorials may be made in Carl's memory to Iowa City Hospice, Tiffin Grace United Methodist Church or a charity of your choice.
