Devyn Marble’s NBA career starts Tuesday

Oct. 27, 2014 3:57 pm
Since 2010, the only ex-Hawkeye to play in the NBA is Reggie Evans, who is beginning his 13th season. Evans is now a Sacramento King, marking his seventh NBA team.
It seems highly likely rookie Devyn Marble of Iowa will play at some point this season for the Orlando Magic. The question is how soon.
Marble is on the Magic's 15-player roster and will be with the team when it starts the 2014-15 season Tuesday night at New Orleans. Whether he'll be among the 12 players activated for the game remains to be seen. He may be, because Orlando will have only 13 players available.
Starting guard Victor Oladipo will be out a month after surgery to repair a facial fracture, and power forward Channing Frye is out for now with a sprained knee.
Orlando has depth at shooting guard — Marble's position — in veterans Ben Gordon, Evan Fournier and Willie Green.
Marble got a lot of minutes early in the preseason, but wasn't in the Magic's 10-player rotation late in the preseason. His preseason stats for the six games he played:
Minutes:
14.2 per game
Field goal percentage
: .484
3-point percentage
: .357
Free throw percentage
: .500
Rebounds
: 1.5
Assists
0.8
Turnovers
0.2 (one in six games)
Points
6.8
What seems distinctly possible is that Marble will be shuttled to their D-League affiliate in Erie, Pa., for a part or parts of the season. The Erie BayHawks' season doesn't start until Nov. 14.
This has become more and more common in the NBA, with many second-round picks spending a significant part of their first pro season in the D-League. The Houston Rockets and Oklahoma City Thunder have been big proponents of developing rookies in the D-League instead letting them gather rust at the end of their benches.
It looks like 17 of the 30 players taken in the second round of the 2014 NBA Draft will start this season in the NBA. Two were unsigned and will start their careers in the D-League. The other 11 are being stashed overseas, with the teams that drafted them retaining their NBA rights.
One of those 11, Edy Taveres, is a 7-foot-3 project who was picked by the Atlanta Hawks. He is playing for a team in the Canary Islands.
Marble was the 56th player taken in the draft. The No. 37 player in the draft, DeAndre Daniels of Connecticut, is a Toronto Raptors draftee who is playing in Australia this season.
Marble signed a 3-year contract worth $2,710,369. His first-year salary of $884,879 is guaranteed.
